Kayoko Ishikura
Contemporary painting artist. Born in Hiroshima. Based and woking in Tokyo.
Graduated from the Correspondence Course in Oil Painting, Faculty of Art and Design, Musashino Art University.
When she was a teenager, Kayoko Ishikura gave up her dream of becoming a painter due to her parents’ opposition, and enrolled in a general education university to gain work experience. The more she gained various experiences, the stronger her desire to express them through her work, so in 2016 she enrolled in the Musashino Art University Faculty of Art and Design correspondence course and graduated in 2019. She began her career as an artist in 2020. Her experiences as an editor/writer, athlete, and jazz singer have influenced her to create works that are broad-minded, flexible, and rich.
Her work is finished using a variety of unconventional techniques, such as acrylic paint, stamping, and collage on canvas and paper. The characteristic of her work is the beauty and impact of the striking colors, which is influenced by the contemporary American paintings that Ishikura grew up seeing in the 1960s and 1970s when she was a child, mainly modernist art and color field painting. She has a strong admiration for graphical and flat screens, and completes them by weaving in the elements of the four seasons unique to Japan.
